Run by music educator Angus Grant, Victorian Opera’s Youth Chorus Ensemble (VOYCE) provides regular training for secondary school and tertiary students between the ages of 13–20, focusing on dramatic works and singing, with heavy emphasis applied to the delivery of text and expression of dramatic intent and movement.

Throughout the school year, participants have access to professional singers, repetiteurs and directors from the performing arts industry, receiving educational and performance-based expertise and opportunities of state-company calibre. Participants also have the chance to perform in Victorian Opera’s Youth Opera and mainstage productions.

VOYCE brings together like-minded and equally passionate young people to take part in a program that rehearses a range of operatic repertoire and develops skills essential to opera chorus roles.

VOYCE rehearses every Tuesday night during school terms from 5.45pm – 7.45pm. Rehearsals are held in the Hemstritch Studio, Horti Hall, 31 Victoria Street, Melbourne 3000. (Face-to-face rehearsals currently suspended due to COVID-19.)

Youth Opera

Victorian Opera's very first performance in 2006 was a Youth Opera. Since then, it has performed one Youth Opera each year.

Our 2020 Youth Opera, Schubert's The Friends of Salamanca, has been postponed and will now take place in 2021. This production will premiere the Victorian Opera Youth Orchestra. More information regarding audition registrations for singers and musicians will be available early next year.
